Distinguishing Somatic Release from Protective Responses: Genuine somatic release is about creating a safe environment for the body to release stored physical or emotional tension through parasympathetic activation, promoting deep relaxation and healing. When breath-holding leads to convulsions or extreme physical reactions, it’s likely the body’s protective mechanism kicking in, triggered by the sympathetic response. Instead of releasing tension, it’s reacting to what it perceives as a threat, trying to restore oxygen flow and balance.

They’re the body’s way of overriding the hold to protect itself from a perceived state of suffocation or imbalance.
