The color purple does NOT exist. Your brain just makes it up.

Here’s a color twist you didn’t see coming: purple doesn’t exist on the visible light spectrum. That’s right – there is no single wavelength of light that corresponds to the color purple. So… how are you seeing it?

When your eyes detect red and blue light at the same time, your brain is faced with a dilemma. Those wavelengths are on opposite ends of the visible spectrum, and there’s no “in-between” wavelength that connects them directly. So your brain improvises. It bends the color spectrum into a circle – a concept known as the color wheel – and creates a new perception to bridge the gap: purple.

This makes purple a non-spectral color – a color that doesn’t exist in the natural spectrum of light, but instead is fabricated by your brain to make sense of conflicting input. That’s why you’ll never see purple in a rainbow – there’s no “P” in ROYGBIV.

Meanwhile, violet (often confused with purple) does have its own place in the spectrum. It has a short wavelength and sits just before ultraviolet light. It’s why UV radiation from the Sun can burn your skin even if you can’t see it.

Our perception of color depends on cone cells in our eyes – specialized photoreceptors that detect red (long wavelengths), green (medium), and blue (short). These cells don’t see color directly. They send signals to your brain, which compares their responses and decodes what you “see.”

So when you look at something purple, what’s really happening is your brain is resolving a contradiction. It’s blending the extremes of red and blue, filling in the missing middle with a completely made-up experience.

In other words, purple is a beautiful illusion – a pigment of your imagination.
